DIY Or Splurge: What To Know About Taking Care Of Your Car

Posted on

With so many do-it-yourself tutorials online, it can be hard to know what things you should attempt on your own and what things should be left up to the professionals. And although saving some money here and there is good, if you mess up on a DIY project, it could end up costing you more than it initially did. When it comes to car repairs, this article will list two things you can try to DIY and one thing that's definitely worth leaving to the professionals.

DIY: Oil Change

How often you drive your car, what type of car you have, and the oil you use in your engine will all help determine just how often you need to have your oil changed. For conventional oil, you will have to have it changed every 2,000-3,000 miles on average, and it costs about $46 per oil change. But because the oil itself is only maybe a quarter of that price, you are really throwing money out the window. By learning to do an oil change from your own garage, you can save several hundreds of dollars each year, which is more money in your bank account.

Splurge: Tune Up

Every 50 or so thousand miles, you are going to need to get a professional tune-up from an auto shop, and it's not something that anyone would recommend that you do on your own. Rather than wasting any time looking at YouTube or videos online on how to do any kind of auto tune-up, just take it into an auto shop. Not only do these auto service mechanics have expertise and training, but they should be able to get the job done right the first time around.

DIY: Auto Detailing

You can pay hundreds of dollars for an auto detailing service where they will clean the inside and outside of your car so that it looks brand-new. And although they may say they have specialized equipment to do the job, most of them just have some all-purpose cleaner, a vacuum, and a couple of rags-- which means that there is virtually no reason for you to even pay someone to do this in the first place. Sure, it may take you a couple of hours, but it will also save you hundreds of dollars as well.

There are some things worth splurging on, and some things worth trying to do on your own. To learn more about professional auto help, contact an auto shop like Sam's Tire Service Inc near you.
